It will be very hard to find another sports anime as good as Haikyuu. The animation, character development, the music and the million other things tha make this anime unique. It’s a combination rarely found.
One of my end-of-year / new year’s rituals is to re-watch the whole thing, start to finish during the holiday season. The story and characters are so well done it motivates me to train. I don’t do volleyball but martial arts. Or the simple act of going for a run. The anime is that powerful.
The 3 first seasons are gold, you might like more the first or the 3rd but you can’t deny how well done the 3rd was made. The match against Shiratorizawa, was a single season dedicated to that single match. The first time I heard about it I was very reluctant but I did change my mind very quickly. The tension you could feel, the not knowing what was going to happen, the beautiful animation… You could barely ask for more. Well you could, just make a longer season.
Here enters the 4th season, it aired during the COVID-19 pandemic, they changed the animation studio and it all went to shit 💩
❌ They should have never lowered the quality
I don’t know the reason (perhaps a contract?) but they should have never released something like that. Lowering the standards, throwing down the toilet the reputation from the previous 3 seasons.
The story for the 4th season is not bad. We get to see two matches, a fair amount of character development, good dialog, and new characters… and yet it feels bland. The animation is so bad it hurts, it really hurts to watch it. I can understand the use of static images for backgrounds, match spectators, and such. But spending so little time drawing the main characters, it’s just unforgivable. To what end? Deliver a product you’re not proud of? 🤷♂️
The worst part is that some secondary characters were way less affected. Players from Nekoma or other schools (some) kept almost the same drawing quality while the main characters were degraded 🤦♂️
I get that COVID-19 caught everybody by surprise but just go on hiatus, just push the production for later. Delivering this piece of crap is not helping you in manga sales or merchandising. Hardcore fans like you and me will feel sick looking at Kageyama 🤢
What’s your take? Why did we get this season like this?
