Your Name

I went to the cinema in Barcelona when the movie was aired here, I think about the same year it was released in Japan (2016).

At first, the movie seems like a funny and beautifully drawn slice of life or comedy. Only to become a tear-jerking drama. Not in the sense of death or physical pain, but very emotional.

The setting is also great, the country girl who wants to move to Tokyo, one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world. Who can blame her?

You can’t help but empathize with the main characters in their pursuit of happiness, on their pursuit of love. What else do you need?

The movie holds itself very well with only the main couple with a small cast of side characters supporting them. It’s fast-paced and it doesn’t slow down, it keeps you engaged and focused.

It’s impossible not to notice the soundtrack, it works wonderfully with the story and the mood it sets. I’ve come across this soundtrack on Spotify and YouTube over the years after the movie’s release. It still works, it’s still beautiful.

The ending is so open that you can only imagine what happens next. I want to believe they eventually remember each other and start a life together. It could also be they just start to know each other from scratch but those tears in their faces at the end… 😭 I’ve got to admit some times I do prefer closed endings, I would’ve loved to see them together. Sure, wouldn’t work as well for all audiences, but would’ve worked for me 😁
