A Silent Voice

Yet another movie from 2016, certainly a good year for movies! Koe no Katachi is not easy to watch. Let me elaborate.

The movie touches on school bullying and suicide, which are topics not meant for all audiences. It’s truly a horrifying thing and you feel like crap while watching it. Fortunately, the movie starts to get better and saves you from having to stop and get a tissue.

It’s nothing new that humans can be disgusting beings not worthy of the air they breathe. Especially when picking on defenseless children. The kids in this movie are unforgivable pieces of trash, but still, the movie sells on redemption and forgiveness… because why not.

Can or should you forgive a bully because they have changed? Is it as easy as apologizing?

The main character here goes from being the bully to being bullied, to which I say: karma much?

Ok, ok, no bullying is excusable but the movie makes you feel for the main character. Ishida, the bully boy, hasn’t forgotten his own bullying towards others and weights heavy on his shoulders. Although I don’t think that’s what’s driving him to suicide. It’s the being bullied, alone and without friends. He spends the movie trying to redeem himself (by being just a regular normal kind person?)

I have mixed feelings about this movie. I loved the animation, the pace, the acting… but I don’t know if the story is too happy-ended.

Is the ending what you hoped for? Are you able to forgive Ishida?
