A cheap version of Ryman’s Club
I’ve been playing badminton once a week for the last six months so I was definitely intrigued by this anime.
After watching Ryman’s Club I felt compelled to watch this, even if the score on MAL was already giving me red flags 🚨
It took me a long time to finish Love All Play, the animation is below average to nonexistent in some parts. Compared to the high-quality animation from Ryman’s Club or any other recent anime sports.
Ok sure, Ryman’s Club is just 12 episodes, and Love All Play 24 which means either you get double the budget or you cut corners. I’m inclined to think the latter happened.
Shallow characters
They try to give you a backstory for several characters but it all feels very shallow and nonsensical. The young high school student who has a platonic love for a senior girl and only plays badminton in the hopes she’ll go on a date with him? That’s it? That’s why you’ve been busting your ass all this time?
I understand playing badminton for the pure enjoyment of it, is more than valid, but felt like the characters could’ve been better written. Perhaps too much cliché? The diamond in the rough player, the four-eyes smart kid, the big and easygoing, the shy and mysterious… Is this a boy band?
Would this anime have worked with 12 episodes?
I think so ✅ The story was not so complex you needed a lengthy season to explain everything. The worst part is they left the best for the end (of course). They squeezed every last yen in the budget to animate a little bit better, the voice actors did a good job and the story closed nicely.
After the first 10-12 episodes it felt a little bit filler with slow progression, hence why it was hard for me to pick up while having others on my watchlist.
